What Do I Do When My Computer is Running Slow?

If it seems as though your computer is taking a long time to do virtually any task, there are several ways you may be able to solve the problem.

Always start by rebooting your computer to see if that will be a quick fix.

If that doesn’t work, chances are good that your hard drive is too full and that is causing your computer to slow down. To reduce what’s on your hard drive, remove all of the files you no longer need and put some others on an external hard drive.

Also, run your anti-virus and anti-spyware software to make sure that your computer is not infected.

In addition, run a firewall application, which may help to further increase your computer’s speed of operation.

It’s important to make sure that you are not running any autoloading programs that you don’t need as these will significantly slow your computer. This happens especially with new computers that are often packed with bundled programs that reload every time your computer boots. You don’t need to remove these programs, just turn off their autoloading function.

Lastly, try not to upload new programs. The more you upload, the slower your computer will run.

If there still seems to be an issue because your computer is running slow, you may want to consider upgrading your hard drive to a solid-state drive (SSD). This upgrade, in combination with the steps above, might be a solution.
